We’ve published our 2025 end of year report.
The report highlights a record year for screening in Ireland and shows the progress we have made delivering our strategic plan – Choose Screening, Together we can make a difference.
More people than ever took part in screening, while we improved access, strengthened quality and built a stronger, more future-ready service.
Key progress included:
- easier access to screening with new digital tools such as the enhanced BowelScreen online register and BreastCheck appointment information on the HSE Health App
- advancing equity through more community-led initiatives that brought screening to more people, including migrants and people experiencing homelessness
- more staff to support our screening programmes to meet increasing population demand
- reinforcing operational excellence through strengthened governance, quality assurance and staff capability, including EUREF re-certification of BreastCheck and award-winning work by the CervicalCheck Screening Training Unit
- wider access to BowelScreen, expanding the age range to everyone aged 58 to 70, in line with the National Cancer Strategy, and increasing system capacity and locations for timely diagnosis and treatment as close to home as possible
- better, clearer communications through the introduction and implementation of a communications toolkit
- stronger patient involvement through our Patient and Public Partnership and working with patient advocates
- strengthening collaborations with international partners including through the EUCanScreen project
- laying strong foundations for improved data with the publication of our Data Ecosystem Roadmap 2025-2030
- new digital and AI developments to strengthen service delivery and improve productivity and efficiency across all our screening programmes
- supporting health service reform, in line with Sláintecare, through engagement with the HSE Health Regions to ensure that screening services are delivered in a standardised way across the country and that all eligible screening participants have access to appropriate screening pathways.
Publishing the report, our Chief Executive Fiona Murphy said: “This report shows the progress we are making as we deliver large-scale, population-based screening in a changing health system and to a more diverse population.
“In 2025, we screened more people than ever before. This reflects the continued rapid growth of our population, particularly in BreastCheck, and it challenges us to keep adapting our services to meet people’s needs.
“Our staff, partners and communities make this progress possible. Together, we are strengthening screening services today while preparing for the future - helping to prevent disease, support early diagnosis and improve people’s health.”
