Sepsis remains one of the most significant patient safety challenges facing healthcare systems and continues to be a major cause of preventable harm, morbidity and mortality.
The Action on Sepsis: Five-Year Strategy (2026–2030) sets out a comprehensive, system-wide plan to improve:
- sepsis prevention
- early recognition
- treatment
- support for sepsis survivors across adult, maternity, paediatric and community services
The Strategy, grounded in Irish data and international best practice has been developed by the National Clinical Programme for Sepsis and National Quality and Patient Safety team.
Launched on Monday 14 September by the Minister Health Minster for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD she said: “Sepsis is one of the biggest challenges facing healthcare in Ireland, and across the world. I am delighted to launch the Action on Sepsis strategy and to recognise the work in improving standards in sepsis treatment."
Michael O’ Dwyer, Clinical Lead, HSE Sepsis Programme added: “Sepsis is an ever-evolving challenge in terms of recognition and treatment. We can always improve in our role as healthcare providers and this strategy will help in that regard.
