This week, Monday 18 to 21 November is Stop Pressure Ulcer week.
A pressure ulcer or bed sore, is a painful injury to the skin and underlying tissue. This is caused by prolonged pressure, often from lying or sitting in one position too long. Pressure ulcers are common in areas like the hips, tailbone, heels, and elbows. Pressure ulcers can affect people with limited mobility, such as those confined to beds or wheelchairs. These sores range from mild skin redness to deep wounds reaching muscles and bones. If untreated, pressure ulcers can lead to severe infections, delayed recovery, and decreased quality of life. Regular movement, proper cushioning, and good skin care are essential to prevent them.
