By Hilary Coffey Farrell, Programme Manager, BowelScreen
At BowelScreen, we believe that small changes can make a big difference - especially when it comes to protecting our environment. That’s why we’re excited to share a meaningful update that reflects our commitment to sustainability.
100% recyclable envelopes
From August 2025, the padded envelope used to return your BowelScreen sample will be 100% recyclable. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce waste and improve the environmental footprint of our screening programme.
We know that healthcare can generate a significant amount of packaging and materials. By switching to recyclable return envelopes for the FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) kits, we’re taking a practical step towards a more sustainable future - without compromising the quality or safety of our service.
Supporting the HSE Climate Action Strategy 2023–2050
This initiative is closely aligned with the HSE Climate Action Strategy 2023–2050, which outlines a bold vision: to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and deliver healthcare that is both environmentally and socially sustainable.
As part of the HSE, BowelScreen is committed to supporting this vision. We are actively working to ensure that our purchasing and operational practices reflect the HSE’s decarbonisation and sustainability goals.
Why it matters
Sustainability in healthcare isn’t just about reducing emissions - it’s about creating systems that are resilient, responsible, and respectful of the world we live in.
By making our return envelopes recyclable, we’re helping to:
- reduce landfill waste
- lower our carbon footprint
- encourage environmentally conscious practices across the healthcare sector.
Looking ahead
This is just one step we’re taking to make BowelScreen more sustainable. We’re continuously reviewing our processes and materials to find new ways to reduce our environmental impact, because we believe that protecting your health and protecting the planet go hand in hand.
Every little helps. And together, we can make a big difference.
