‘Exceptional’ - BreastCheck participants tell us about their experiences

We’ve published our 2024 BreastCheck Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) survey report.

Most survey participants were positive about the care they got from BreastCheck.

About PREMs

PREMs is a digital survey. We send a text message to our BreastCheck screening participants inviting them to take part in the survey if they:

  • had a recent BreastCheck mammogram
  • got a normal result.

Taking part in the survey is voluntary, and all responses are anonymous and confidential.

The survey captures the experiences of our BreastCheck participants. This helps us to find out:

  • what we are doing well
  • where we can make improvements to the programme.

Survey participants

  • We invited 47,871 screening participants to do the survey.
  • 11,244 took part in the survey.
  • For almost one-third of survey participants, it was their first time to take part in BreastCheck.

Overall experience

On average, survey participants rated their experience of BreastCheck as 9 out of 10.

Net Promoter Score

A net promoter score is a simple way to measure how likely people are to recommend a service to others. BreastCheck achieved a score of 84, which is considered exceptional.

Communications

Most survey participants (97%) found our results letter easy to understand.

When asked how they would like to hear from us in the future, survey participants said:

  • by letter (58%)
  • by email (22%)
  • by text (20%).

Coming to BreastCheck

95% of survey participants said that the BreastCheck unit or mobile unit was easy to get to.

Mammogram experience

  • Most survey participants agreed that they were treated with respect and dignity during their mammogram (88.3%).
  • 73% of participants said they felt mild to no discomfort during the mammogram.

Quality improvement

We ask survey participants to suggest how we could improve the BreastCheck experience. The high number of responses to our survey shows that women want to share their experiences with us and help make our programme better.

Here are some of the improvements we are making:

  • We are now providing BreastCheck appointment information on the HSE Health App. We’ll be adding more features to the App over time, giving you simple, accessible ways to stay informed and in control of your breast screening journey.
  • We are working on a project to improve our BreastCheck letters using an evidence-based and person-centred approach.
