More screening features now available on HSE Health App: Diabetic RetinaScreen appointments and BreastCheck appointment reminders

We’ve added new screening features to the HSE Health App, giving you simple, accessible ways to stay informed about your upcoming screening appointments.

From 22 July 2026, you can now get:

  • Diabetic RetinaScreen appointment information
  • BreastCheck appointment reminder notifications.

Diabetic RetinaScreen

The HSE Health App is available to any person aged 16 and over.

Registered App users will be able to see:

  • upcoming diabetic eye screening appointments
  • cancelled appointments
  • past appointments (from 20 July 2026).

Appointment information will include:

  • date, time and location
  • directions to the location of your appointment
  • information on how to prepare for your appointment
  • a video about what to expect at your appointment
  • information about extra supports available for disabled people who need help to attend their appointment.

The service finder for the location of appointments will enable screening participants to find out their transport options to and from their appointment, as people cannot drive after getting eye drops during their screening.

Registered App users who turn their notifications on in the App, will also receive a notification when appointments are created, updated or cancelled.

BreastCheck

Following on from the introduction of BreastCheck appointments to the HSE Health App in September 2025, we are now providing BreastCheck appointment reminders on the App.

Registered App users with an existing breast screening appointment, and who turn their notifications on in the App, will receive a reminder notification 7 days and 2 days before their appointment.

When you select the notification, you will see:

  • the date, time and location of your appointment
  • directions to the location of your breast screening
  • information on how to prepare for your appointment
  • contact information for BreastCheck.

Bowel and cervical screening

From May 2026, App users who become newly eligible for BowelScreen and CervicalCheck now receive a message in the App about their eligibility and can access information about the screening process within the App. The information guides you to check and update your details so you can get your invite when you are due your screening test.

Changing your appointment

If you need to change your screening appointment, the App will include our contact details - a phone number and email address. When you change or cancel an appointment, the App will be updated with this information.

Appointment letters

We will continue to send appointment letters by post when your screening test is due. We will also send you a reminder text about your appointment, if we have your phone number.

At this time, the HSE Health App is an additional, optional channel through which people can access their appointment information.

How to get push notifications from the App

To get push notifications about your screening appointments, you must allow push notifications in the App. A push notification is a short message from the App that appears on your phone. This allows you to get updates and reminders when you are not using the App.

To turn notifications on:

  • log into the App
  • go to your Account information
  • select ‘App settings’
  • select ‘Message preferences’
  • select ‘Allow’.

More to come

We’ll be adding more features to the App over time. It’s part of our continued work to strengthen our communications with our screening participants and to empower everyone eligible to choose screening.
