Who is it for?

Anyone working in health and social care services including service user and patient representatives who are interested in learning about quality improvement.

How long will it take?

This is an e-learning programme that can be taken at a time and place that suits you. Typically it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete but because it is an e-learning programme you can stop and start the programme whenever you like and you will be able to pick up where you left off.

How do I access it?

Simply log onto the HSE’s online learning portal at www.hseland.ie. If you are already registered, login and search for ‘Introduction to Quality Improvement.’ If you are new to HSeLanD, select ‘create an account’ and follow the registration instructions.

What will I learn?

During this programme you will learn about:

1. What Quality Improvement means in line with healthcare standards.
2. How staff and anyone who uses our health services can get involved in improvement work.
3. How improvement can be supported by the application of the Framework for Improving Quality.
4. How a staff member and patient got involved in quality improvement and how you too can play an active role in improving your service.
5. Where to look for support to continue your QI learning journey.

The programme has received category 1 approval from the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland and learners will be awarded 1 CEU upon completion. It has also been awarded 1 CPD point by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

2. The importance of everyone taking responsibility to lead and engage others in improvement.
3. How we partner with people who use services.
4. What staff engagement is and how our actions can impact others.
5. The variety of tools used to improve quality.
6. How important data and measurement are in improvement work.
7. How structures, processes, oversight and accountability are key to improvement.

The programme has received category 1 approval from the Nurse & Midwifery Board of Ireland and 3 CPD points by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

What is the aim of this programme?

This is a team- and project-based learning programme, designed to provide learners with leading edge knowledge and skills in aspects of quality improvement, implementation science, patient safety and enhanced leadership capacity. The programme is a key implementation support for the HSE Patient Safety Strategy 2019-2024 in facilitating healthcare teams to identify and address the common causes of harm.

The programme is designed to enable your team to become champions of change in healthcare. The expert faculty will share their cutting edge knowledge and skills in all aspects of quality improvement, implementation science, patient safety and enhanced leadership capacity.

Who is it for?

This programme is fully funded by the National Quality and Patient Safety Directorate, therefore it is free for all teams (3-4 people) working in the HSE who are accepted onto the course.

Teams should be multidisciplinary and have appropriate expertise related to the quality improvement project area. For example, a medication safety team should include at least two disciplines, e.g. a doctor, pharmacist and midwife.

How long will it take?

This programme is delivered using blended learning, a flexible way of completing the course that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods.

The programme is delivered over 10 months and will include approximately 7 full-day in-person sessions, 5 full-day virtual classroom sessions and a series of virtual team calls. All in-person sessions will be held in RCPI, No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin.

The programme is accredited at level 9 with the National Quality Framework for the attainment of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits.
